18th Century - The Captive Christ - Mexican Viceregal Colonial School, New Spain Oil on canvas mounted on a panel. Christ, wearing a crown of thorns and a rope around his torso, is shown seated on a rock in a pose of deep contemplation. The figure is silhouetted against a dark background, with drapery framing the scene and highlighting the realistic and dramatic anatomy. His body, illuminated from the left, reveals careful rendering of light and shadow, emphasizing muscular tension and an expression of resignation. The color palette is subdued, dominated by ochres, earth tones, and whites, with a technique that highlights the glazes and transparencies typical of the Baroque period. A devotional work, rooted in the iconography of Ecce Homo or the Man of Sorrows, it depicts redemptive suffering with remarkable emotional intensity and expressive restraint. 80 × 59 cm.
