1602 - Charcoal with Birds, European School, 19th Century

Charcoal with Birds, European School, 19th Century Charcoal drawing on paper. Dimensions: 17 x 11 cm (unframed), 24 x 18 cm (framed). The scene depicts an old man with a full beard and a heavy coat, surrounded by small birds fluttering around him. The strokes are light yet expressive, defining the forms through gradual shading that suggests texture and atmosphere. The central figure, slightly hunched, is integrated into an undefined space dominated by the subtlety of graphite and diffused light. This drawing, with a costumbrista and humanist tone, is part of the nineteenth-century tradition of life study, where direct observation is combined with a simple and melancholic poetic approach. The artist’s sensitivity is evident in the tenderness of the gesture and the delicacy of the lines, which evoke the passage of time and the spiritual connection with nature.
