1596 - Virgin, Spanish School, 19th Century

Virgin, Spanish School, 19th Century Oil on panel. Dimensions: 69 x 55 cm (unframed), 81 x 66 cm (framed). The image of the Virgin, depicted in half-length and in a prayerful pose, stands out for its serenity and the delicate rendering of her face, which bears a sweet and devout expression. The dark mantle and ivory veil frame an idealized countenance, softly illuminated by a zenithal light that accentuates her spiritual contemplation. The brushwork is fine and restrained, with special attention paid to the flesh tones and the folds of the fabric. This iconographic style, characteristic of the 19th century, draws on the heritage of Baroque religious painting, but with a greater Romantic sensitivity toward introspection and emotional purity. The composition conveys a silent and contemplative spirituality, reinforced by the dark background that focuses all attention on the sacred figure, transforming her into a symbol of virtue and consolation.
