1527 - Salome with the Head of Saint John the Baptist. Copy by Titian. Italian School. 19th century.

Salome with the Head of Saint John the Baptist. Copy by Titian. Italian School. 19th century. Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 47 x 38 cm; framed 62 x 53 cm. A 19th-century painting that faithfully reproduces Titian's famous composition. The young Salome, with a delicate countenance and dressed in rich red and gold tones, holds the decapitated head of St. John the Baptist on a platter, its dramatic shadow hidden in the gloom. The contrast between the vitality of the female figure and the harshness of the martyrdom motif intensifies the symbolic meaning. The dark background enhances the clarity of the subject’s skin and idealized features, in keeping with the Venetian Renaissance style as reinterpreted in the 19th century. This is an academic work, intended for a cultured collector who appreciated recreations of the great masters.
