Painting. Colonial or Popular School. 18th century. Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 74 x 56 cm. The composition features two standing figures, likely Saint John and the Virgin, positioned on either side of a large central cross. Both figures appear in a contemplative pose, wrapped in wide reddish and greenish cloaks that contrast with the dark background, highlighting the expressive power of their faces and the delicate chiaroscuro. The crackle on the surface reveals the work’s age, while the firm brushstrokes and hieratic proportions evoke colonial or popular painting in the Baroque tradition, clearly influenced by viceregal workshops. The restrained spirituality and symmetrical composition reinforce its devotional character and its significance within 18th-century religious art. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
