P. BOEHM. Pál (Paul) Böhm (December 28, 1839–1905, Munich) Hungarian-German School—19th century. Oil on panel. Dimensions: 35 x 34 cm. This rural scene, remarkably rich in color and composition, depicts a woodcutter guiding a cart pulled by two horses through a dense mountain forest. The figure, dressed in traditional clothing, walks with a firm step along a path surrounded by ancient trees, while in the background the Alpine peaks rise beneath a blue sky dotted with luminous clouds. The execution is precise and detailed, demonstrating technical mastery in the depiction of the animals’ fur, the texture of the tree bark, and the light effects that permeate the scene. The chiaroscuro enhances the spatial depth, while the palette—dominated by earthy greens and atmospheric blues—creates a naturalistic balance that reinforces the harmony of the landscape. This work, signed by Pál Böhm, belongs to the tradition of 19th-century Central European Realism, in which the landscape is not merely a backdrop but also a narrative protagonist. His approach combines ethnographic observation with a romantic sensitivity toward nature, reflecting rural life and its trades with a respectful and aesthetically refined gaze. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
