564 - Rest on the Flight into Egypt. Italian School. 17th century

Rest on the Flight into Egypt. Italian School. 17th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 48 x 63 cm. The Holy Family appears in a twilight landscape: Saint Joseph sleeps in the background while Mary, seated on the ground, breastfeeds the Child Jesus in an intimate and maternal gesture that conveys serenity and protection. The landscape, with silhouetted trees and a distant village, creates an atmosphere of calm enveloped in soft shadows. The composition is built on a balance between the human and the divine, emphasized by the emotional bond between mother and child. The use of chiaroscuro delicately defines the forms, and the texture of the fabric shines particularly brightly in the folds of the blue cloak and white tunic. This painting belongs to the Italian School of the mid-17th century, in which the landscape takes center stage as a spiritual space, while emphasizing the naturalness of the Gospel story. Its restrained lyricism and refined technical execution give the work a deeply contemplative character. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist.
