True likeness of the Venerable Friar Francisco de Posadas. Cordoba School. 18th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 103 x 78 / 121 x 97 cm. A devotional, half-length portrait of the Venerable Friar Francisco de Posadas, dressed in a Dominican habit and depicted in a meditative pose, holding a rosary and reaching toward a table with a book and study materials. The figure stands out against a dark background and somber drapery that draws attention to the ascetic face, the severity of the gesture, and the spiritual intensity of the scene. The composition underscores the friar’s humility, discipline, and inner life through a restrained arrangement of attributes and subdued lighting that powerfully renders the flesh tones and the folds of the habit. The work exemplifies the Andalusian Baroque convent portrait style of the first half of the 18th century, in which the moral dignity of the subject takes precedence over theatrical staging, lending the image a distinctly exemplary and devotional value.
