Large St. Jerome - Palma the Younger. Jacopo Negretti (Venice, c. 1548–1628), 17th century Oil on canvas, dimensions: 156 x 104.7 cm. Framed dimensions: 180 x 130 cm. Provenance: private collection, London. (Venice, c. 1548–1628). Italian painter. With the gradual disappearance of the great Venetian masters of the 16th century, Jacopo Negretti became the city’s most prominent and renowned artist. He was trained within his family—as the son of Antonio Negretti and the great-nephew of Palma Vecchio—and also spent a brief period in Titian’s workshop. He worked in Urbino at the invitation of Duke Guidobaldo, whom he had met in Venice in 1564. Also at the Duke’s behest, he later traveled to Rome, arriving in 1567, before returning to Venice in 1570. He was an exceptionally prolific artist, frequently commissioned for a wide variety of public works by the ecclesiastical and political authorities of Venice. In these works, he demonstrated his talent for depicting all kinds of subjects, effectively applying a series of learned techniques and approaches without any noticeable evolution in either his pictorial style or his subjects. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before ...
