145 - Pair of anthropomorphic hardwood statues

Pair of anthropomorphic hardwood statues Carved from a single piece of wood, these figures depict a man and a woman standing facing the viewer, with their arms bent and hands open in front of their torsos. Their faces are stylized, with large, round, incised eyes, prominent noses, and subtle mouths. The oval heads appear disproportionately large compared to the bodies, and the anatomical details—the woman’s breasts and the man’s genitalia—are clearly indicated with great restraint. The wood’s surface displays a dark patina, marked by use and the passage of time, a testament to antiquity and traditional practices. The archaic style and robust proportions suggest a tribal origin, where such figures served as guardians, protectors of the home, or symbols of fertility. Indonesia. Irian Jaya.
