ALASKA Yup’ik mask. Wood, feathers, polychrome: blue, ochre, white, yellow. The shaman uses these masks to ensure a successful hunt and catch, which are essential to the survival of the family and the clan. These masks embody the Yua, the souls of animals and fish—essential sources of their staple food: feathers for birds, the whale, forage fish, and, on the sides, depictions of moose antlers.
