GABON Okuyi or Mukuyi mask, in the Punu style. Light wood, kaolin, red clay, and black ash. The Okuyi plays a role, among other things, in the initiation into the ancestor cult, the Bwiti, the most important secret society among the Punu. During the presentation of the masks, the initiate ingests iboga, a hallucinogenic plant that transports him to the afterlife—the place from which he came and to which he will return. In his ecstatic vision, the masks appear, and he encounters the ancestors, receiving the teachings that accompany this experience. The initiate has seen the Bwiti. He is now a member of the secret society. H.: 28 cm - Base included.
