DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO Nkishi Songye-style statue. Hard, dark wood, fabric, glass beads, horn. This apotropaic fetish was intended to ward off spirits and forces harmful to the family. The posture evokes the defense of the territory—imposing, serene, and determined. The magical charge contained within the horn and the wrapping above the abdominal section—which represents the family—required the sacrifice of a fowl or a goat. H.: 37 cm, 54 cm including the horn
