DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO Ngbaka-style statuette, Ubangi Hardwood, kaolin, patina from use. The incisions on its nose and above its mouth are characteristic of Ngbaka art. Its distinctly cubist form is also common in works from this region. Statuettes from this region are uncommon, and their uses are very rarely definitively established, except that they were part of the rite of passage from childhood to adulthood, the Ganza, and were also offered to village leaders as a symbol of protection and well-being.
