Ivory Coast Blolo Bian statuette, in the Baoulé style Hardwood, glossy black patina from use, signs of wear. Among the Baoulé, the essence of life takes place in a parallel world—a world beyond—where one lives before and after one’s earthly existence, which is merely a fleeting phase of life. This parallel world is called the Blolo. Every person, man or woman, has a sexual partner in this parallel world: the Blolo bla for men and the Blolo bian for women. This representation of the sexual partner from the afterlife must be the object of sustained attention, in the form of offerings; furthermore, one night a week must be set aside for intimate relations with this partner. H.: 53 cm
