NIGERIA A type of head from the Edo people, known as “uhunmwun elao,” represents ancestral kings (Oba) and was placed on altars for ancestor worship. Although related to the commemorative bronze and brass heads commissioned for royal altars, these wooden heads were made for the lower-ranking ancestral altars of Edo chiefs and reflect an idealized image of supreme authority. This piece features all the royal attributes. The forehead bears rectangular incisions into which ivory or bronze plaques would have been inserted. The eyes are still filled with an unidentified substance. The sculpture is compact and very well-balanced. The carved feather adds height and lightens the overall composition. Dense wood, some wear, minor losses. H: 32 cm Early 20th century
