LEVY-DHURMER, Lucien (Lucien Lévy, known as) [Algiers, 1865 – Vésinet, 1953], French Symbolist painter, sculptor, and ceramicist. Signed autograph letter. 3 bis rue Labruyère, July 2, 1920; 2 pages, in-8°. Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer explains how he painted the portrait of Renée Vivien. “You tell me you don’t know under what circumstances the portrait of Renée Vivien was painted—it’s simple: Renée Vivien, whom I did not know, sent me three volumes of her poetry—asking me how I saw her—I described to her the portrait you are familiar with—she was intrigued to see herself interpreted through her work—and the sessions followed.”
