SAND, George—*Malgrétout*. Paris: Michel Lévy, 1870. In-12, (2) ff., 330 pp., purple chagrin plate from the publisher, medallion in the center of the covers, fleurons at the corners, ribbed spine with faded decoration, internal dentation, gilt edges. First edition. Autographed copy sent to Edmond Plauchut, to whom the book is dedicated: “To my dear child Edmond Plauchut. G. Sand.” Edmond Plauchut (1824–1909), a French journalist, writer, and traveler, was a close friend of George Sand and her son Maurice. After a brief career in journalism in Angoulême, Plauchut left France in 1850 to pursue business ventures in Manila, Philippines. Upon his return to France in 1861, Plauchut frequently stayed with the Sand family at their estate in Nohant. He had known George Sand through a correspondence that began before his departure for Asia. His works include travelogues, regional historical studies, ethnographic works, and *Autour de Nohant* (1897), dedicated to George Sand.
