SAND, George (known as Aurore Dupin, Baroness Dudevant) [Paris, 1804 – Nohant, 1876], French novelist. Autograph letter addressed to Emilie de Cornnelier. Paris, April 28, 1824; 3 pages, in-8° format, with an address on the back. A touching letter from George Sand, then a new mother and very proud of her son. At the beginning of her letter, she expresses her joy at receiving news from her friend, who has just had a child. She then gives her an update on her travels to the countryside, which she did not enjoy: “It is a beautiful region, a charming home, but very sad in that there is no social life. The people of Berry are unbearable—far more boring than those of Limousin!” We’re looking to rent or buy a pretty country house near Melun or Mongeron, and I imagine we’ll settle there soon. In the meantime—I’m delighted to be in Paris, which I love very much, though I don’t particularly care for the people [...] But I go to the theater, and I’m on the go all day. My dear Maurice was weaned two months ago; he’ll be 10 soon. ” She then praises her son and describes the meeting between Maurice and his grandfather. “He was suffering from gout; our arrival cured him—he’s now running around like a rabbit. We put the little guy [Maurice] between his legs, and he’s as happy as a king.”
