NECKER DE SAUSSURE, Albertine Adrienne—*L'Education progressive, ou Etude du cours de la vie*. Paris, Sautelet; Paulin, 1836–1838. 3 vols. in-8, a few foxing spots, publisher’s mauve half-leather, smooth spine with slightly faded decoration. First edition of Volume III, published two years later. Adrienne-Albertine de Saussure was born in Geneva in 1765. She was the daughter of the scholar H.-B. de Saussure and received a brilliant education under her father’s supervision and guidance. Married to Jacques Necker, nephew of Louis XVI’s minister, and friends with her cousin Madame de Staël, she lived for several years among the most distinguished society of the time. The first two volumes deal with education in general. The author begins with the child at birth and follows the child until the age of fourteen—that is, until the tutor moves from the primary role to a secondary one and personal education takes precedence over formal instruction. The third volume is specifically devoted to the education of women and follows them throughout their lives.
