ABRANTÈS, Laure Saint-Martin Permon, Duchess of [Montpellier, 1784 – Paris, 1838], writer, widow of General Junot, mistress of several Romantic writers. Autograph manuscript signed “La Duchesse d’Abrantès” titled “La marquise de Brinvilliers” undated, with erasures and corrections; 27 folio pages. This story of a famous poisoner is followed by a discussion of the Affair of the Poisons and the end of the affair. In a brief preface of a few lines, Laure d’Abrantès, who views this account as “a painful task…,” explains that she is nevertheless compelled to write it: “the same hand that highlights virtues must also reveal crimes….”
