Madame de Staël (Anne Louise Germaine Necker, Baroness of Staël-Holstein, known as) [Paris, 1766 – id., 1817], French writer. Autograph letter. August 17, (1815), addressed to Benjamin Constant; 4 pages, in-4°. She reproaches Constant for not writing to her despite her request. “Why didn’t you write to me first? I had asked you to do so when I left, and moreover, to make it a sort of duty for you, I had asked you to keep me informed of any news concerning my important matter. You went three weeks without writing me a single line, and now you’re telling me what Auguste said about it! That’s not all—you tell me in two pages, in a tone of clearing your conscience, that the Duke of Broglie is thinking of your daughter, and she herself was upset by this thoughtlessness!”
