CURCHODE, Suzanne [1739–1794], Swiss woman of letters, wife of Necker, and mother of Madame de Staël. An autograph letter from Madame Necker. “From the General Control Office this Wednesday”; 2 pages, in-8°. An exceptional letter in which Madame Necker takes a stand against the death penalty for two women who have just given birth. “Here, Your Excellency, are the cases of two unfortunate women who have been condemned to die after giving birth; one is the mother of five children; the other is an eighteen-year-old girl. You will see from the information I have obtained from Mr. d’[Estherasg] regarding the one from Valenciennes and from Mr. de [Brauvillo] regarding the one from Paris. The death penalty seems too severe; people of this nature must undoubtedly be subjected to continuous labor and confined from society forever. But to die after the pains of childbirth is too much, if, as I believe, they have shed no blood. I entrust their fate to the protection of your kindness and piety; and it will be a comfort to me, if there are no more serious charges against these two women, to be the first to seek and receive the influence of your virtues. I continue to implore you to begin by suspending the executions until you are better informed; and I believe there is not a moment to lose. ” Enclosed is a letter from Jacques Necker announcing his daughter’s arrival in Paris; 2½ pages, 12mo.
