SÉVIGNÉ Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de [Paris, 1626 – Château de Grignan, Drôme, 1696], French woman of letters. An unsigned autograph letter following the letter from the Chevalier de Grignan addressed to the Marquis de La Garde. Paris, December 20, 1688; 3 pages, in-8°. The Chevalier de Grignan is very concerned for his friend, who is even sicker than usual. He regrets being so far away and explains that he has begged the Dean of the collegiate church of Grignan to write to him often so that he may receive news of his friend. He himself suffers from gout and is forced to dictate his letters, as he is unable to write. Madame de Sévigné adds a few handwritten lines of support at the end: “I have truly felt, sir, how much I love and esteem you, and how dear and necessary you were to me, given the distress the news of your illness caused me. I praise God with all my heart that you have recovered; I wish you as much health as I have myself, and I assure you, Sir, that you have no friend who is more devoted to you than I am.”
