Versailles; August 19, 1684, 1 page, in-4°. A beautiful and precious letter in which Madame de Maintenon thanks Mlle Scudéry for her gifts. “Believe me, Mademoiselle, that you are highly esteemed by the one (Louis XIV) whom you ceaselessly extol. He has had your latest conversations read to him from all sides and finds them as useful as they are pleasant.” Mlle de Scudéry’s “Conversations” inspired Mme de Maintenon—who had been her friend before becoming her patron—to compose simpler ones intended to be recited by the young ladies of Saint-Cyr.
