HESSEIN DE LA SABLIÈRE, Marguerite [France, March 18, 1640 – France, January 8, 1693], French salon hostess. Autograph letter addressed to the Reverend Father. 3 pages, small 8mo. In it, she gives an update on her life: “It seems to me that I have plenty to tell you; I’m quite pleased that people believe I know how to be happy, because I’ve truly reached the end of my rope with my affairs, and I do everything I can to make it seem that way; but to you—to whom I’ve always spoken my heart—I will not [pretend] pretend about the state I’m in; I can never be happy after the loss I’ve suffered of a person I loved dearly and who loved me in a way that requires no pretense from a person of such refined sensibility as ourselves.”
