DESHOULIÈRES, Antoinette Du Ligier de La Garde, Lady—Poems. Paris: Widow of Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1688. In-8, (1) fol., 220 pp., (5) ff., fawn calfskin from the publisher, decorated ribbed spine. TCH II, 807. A counterfeit published the same year as the original edition. Antoinette Deshoulières (1638–1694) was a friend of Fléchier, Benserade, the Duke of Nevers, Thomas Corneille, Quinault, and Charpentier; hostile to Racine, she played an active role in the “Phèdre controversy”; she was one of the muses of the Moderns. Mme Deshoulières embodied—until her conversion in the final years of her life—a particular aspect of 17th-century libertinism. Above all, in her work, she focused on criticizing society—which she saw as nothing more than the triumph of money and ambition.
