20 - Domenico Morelli (Italian 1823 - 1901) - Oriental Figure, 1895 h cm 55.5X45.5 in frame h cm 61X51 oil on canvas The painting signed and dated at lower left of Orientalist taste by painter Domenico Morelli depicting a woman's face in oriental clothing. The soft and relaxed brushstroke succeeds in rendering a strong introspective intensity of expression. The painting is part of a series of pictures painted between about 1874 and 1895, having oriental scenes as their subjects, which Domenico Morelli painted even though he had never been to those places; thus fitting into the current of Italian Orientalists. The Romantic ideals of the painting blended with strong verism resulting in a late Romantic masterpiece.
