A monumental painted canvas depicting the Lamentation over the Dead Christ. Considering its unusually large horizontal format and textile support, the work may originally have served as an Epitaphios or a related ecclesiastical hanging. 17th-18th century. Painted on canvas. The textile support has been reframed on a later wooden stretcher and frame. Condition: extensive age-related wear to the painted surface, with fading, abrasions, scattered paint losses and small holes. Old repairs and patches are visible to the reverse. Later mounting and framing. Condition report available upon request. Provenance: Ex-collection of Professor Jan Karel Steppe (1918-2009): Belgian Art Historian and Collector, Ghent.
