RENE MAGRITTE "This is not a pipe," the iconic phrase inscribed on the surrealist painting titled "The Treachery of Images: The Two Mysteries," 1928/29. 2 period documents: a photographic reproduction of the painting (period silver print, with a caption/label and stamp on the back) from an exhibition at the Iolas Gallery in Paris (1966) + a reproduction on the cover of a two-panel invitation card for an exhibition at the Brachot Gallery in Paris (1979). 16.5 x 20.2 cm & 24 x 18.5 cm. Cardboard shows signs of handling. Note: Linked to a major figure of Belgian Surrealism, this lot retains the evocative power of the printed materials that helped spread the ideas and images of their era.
