Shiro Kuramata (1934–1991) Cabinet, Nikko model, 1982. Made of wood and lacquered metal, with three drawers and bearing a plaque reading “Memphis Milano, Shiro Kuramata 1982, No. 20” on the back. H. 175 cm, W. 57 cm, D. 57 cm. Provenance: > MyDesign Gallery, Paris > Private collection, Paris Bibliography: > Christine Colin, “Design aujourd’hui,” Flammarion, Paris, 1988, reproduced on p. 70 > Shiro Kuramata, Deyan Sudjic, Phaidon, 2013, model illustrated on p. 318 This piece, created for the legendary Memphis Group in Milan, is an absolute icon of postmodern design. Combining Japanese minimalism with the colorful eccentricity of the Milanese movement, this cabinet stands like a functional totem. The geometric structure features a dark gray cubic cabinet housing three suspended drawers made of powder-pink lacquered wood, which glide smoothly on small azure-blue lacquered rails. This interplay of color contrasts is accentuated by a double tubular frame lacquered in pink, resting on a wide, architectural square base.
