Johan Otto von Spreckelsen (1929–1987) Fragment of the Grande Arche de La Défense, 1986–1987. Made of Carrara marble and inscribed by the architect. H. 3 cm, W. 7.5 cm, D. 2.8 cm. “An open cube. A window onto the world. Like a temporary culmination on the avenue, with an eye toward the future. It is a modern triumphal arch, celebrating the triumph of humanity. It is a symbol of the hope that one day, people will be able to meet freely… ” Such is the ambition of Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, the Danish architect who won the 1983 competition launched by François Mitterrand to design the Grande Arche de la Défense. He is the main character in the French film *L’Inconnu de la Grande Arche*, directed by Stéphane Demoustier and released in 2025, adapted from the novel by Laurence Cossé. The film recounts the true story of this architect, who faced the administrative, economic, and political constraints that marked the realization of his project. Johan Otto von Spreckelsen died in 1987, without seeing his work completed. The Grande Arche was inaugurated in 1989, after being completed under the direction of architect Paul Andreu.
