Ladislas Kijno (1921–2012) Composition, 1970; oil on canvas, signed lower left; 130 x 97 cm. Abandoning traditional paintbrushes, Kijno uses layers of paint and spraying techniques (often with an aerosol can) to follow the contours and breaks in the crumpled material. This work from the 1970s perfectly captures his quest for a totemic and vibrational art: the organic interplay of the folds creates a mental exploration of shadows and flashes, transforming the surface into a textured, almost sacred skin, imbued with raw energy and a graphic style reminiscent of graffiti.
