Joan Miró (1893–1983) The Dog Barking at the Moon, 1952 Lithograph on paper, signed and dated in the lower right corner and numbered 10/80 in the lower left corner Published by Revue Verve, Tériade, Paris 38 x 27.2 cm Provenance: > Gift from the artist to Tériade > Private bequest from Alice Tériade, 2007 > Private collection, Paris This lithograph offers a refined and concise interpretation of an iconic theme developed by the Catalan artist as early as 1926 in his famous painting of the same name. True to his surrealist visual vocabulary, the composition revolves around biomorphic forms and minimalist black and red lines set against a neutral background, evoking the stylized silhouette of an animal facing a nocturnal celestial body. This print attests to Miró’s graphic mastery and the significance of his lithographic output in disseminating his poetic and dreamlike universe throughout the 1950s.
