Jean Hélion (1904–1987) Composition, 1933; watercolor and pencil on paper, signed and dated in the upper right; 18 x 23.5 cm Provenance: > Former Jan & Carin Kron Collection, Sweden > Private collection, Sweden Condition Report: Framed This watercolor is a key work from the artist’s geometric abstraction period. As a co-founder of the Abstraction-Création group in the early 1930s, Jean Hélion developed a rigorous visual language based on orthogonal structures and interlocking forms. This watercolor reflects his exploration of the balance of masses, where dark structural lines delineate and articulate areas of primary colors and subtle, translucent shades. This composition on paper illustrates a pivotal stage in his career, just before his gradual return to figurative art, making this work a significant example of the European constructive avant-garde of the interwar period.
