Édouard Manet (1832–1883) Edgar Poe. Circa 1860. Etching. 150 x 190 mm. Guérin 55. A very fine print on Imperial Japan paper, from the 1890 print run for the Gennevilliers printing house’s album. Creases along the edges of the sheet, particularly in the lower corners. All margins intact. Formerly in the collection of H.M. Petiet (Lugt 5031). “It is likely that this etching was created to illustrate Edgar Poe’s *Extraordinary Tales*, translated by Baudelaire and first published by Michel Lévy in 1856. […] Manet was undoubtedly familiar with the daguerreotype taken in Providence in 1848, depicting Edgar Poe.” (Marcel Guérin, *L’œuvre gravé de Manet*, New York, Amsterdam, Da Capo Press & B. M. Israël, 1969, no. 55).
