Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) (after) The Lady on Horseback and the Landsknecht. Engraving. 77 x 107 mm. Copy of the eponymous engraving from 1497 (Bartsch 82; Meder 84). A fine print on thin laid paper (Italian?), trimmed flush with the plate edge and flush with the base of the monogram. Slight crease marks. A small thinning along the right edge on the reverse, with corresponding foxing on the obverse. From the collection of J. Manheimer (Lugt 1840d). This highly deceptive copy comes from the collection of Julian Manheimer (1871–1947), who lived in Berlin and died in Zurich, where he had taken refuge in 1939. The entry dedicated to him in the Frits Lugt / Custodia Foundation database states: “He sought out prints by Dürer and Rembrandt above all, but his selection criteria were not particularly strict.” This may explain why he mistook this deceptive copy for the master’s original engraving.
