Giovanni ORLANDI (active ca. 1590–1640), after Claude DUCHET (1565–1585) The Dioscuri of the Quirinal, 1602 (17–53) – the original engraved by Antoine LAFRERI in 1544. BURIN. Black-and-white proof from the plate. 493 x 365 mm Framed. Bibliography: A. LAFRERY, Specvlvm Romanae Magnificentiae, Rome, 1544. Engraving created by Lafrery in the 16th century. Upon his death, his nephew—Claude Duchet—produced reprints of these copper plates under his own name. Our piece appears to have been printed in 1602 by Giovanni Orlandi, a Roman and later Neapolitan publisher known for having purchased numerous copper plates from Nicolas Van Aelst, among others. A beautiful piece that illustrates the evolution of copperplate engravings at the end of the Italian Renaissance and at the dawn of the Grand Siècle.
