This painting embodies the stylistic conventions of Flemish Caravaggism, which spread throughout the former Netherlands through artists who had traveled to Italy and studied the innovations of Caravaggio and his followers, such as Gerard Seghers, Dirck van Baburen, and Gerrit van Honthorst. Characterized by a powerful naturalism, this movement is distinguished by a composition tightly focused on the figures and by the use of very pronounced chiaroscuro.
