Salvador DALI (1904–1989) Metamorphoses, circa 1937 Ink drawing (pen) in two sections on a single loose sheet, inserted into a copy of *Metamorphoses of Narcissus*, Paris, Éditions surréalistes, 1937 Printed in an edition of 500 copies The upper part of the sheet features a series of studies of men’s heads, animals (swans), and organic forms (phalluses?), while the lower part shows a study for *The Angelus* after Jean-François Millet, a painting very dear to Dalí, who produced several interpretations of it. On the back of the drawing are five lines, possibly in Dalí’s hand: “From the earth, all the [?], all the repressions, all the anxiety, all the slices of melon, all the clothes—in short, all the civil wars— everything blends into a sublime and swampy mixture of refinement, cannibalism, and the despair of civilization—of which our wildly romantic age is capable.” 26.5 x 21 cm (the sheet) / 28 x 23 cm (the book)
