Karabakh rug (warp, weft, and pile of wool), South Caucasus. Circa 1920–1960 (Signs of wear, previous restorations, likely reduced in size.) Length: 233 cm; Width: 112 cm The carpet is adorned with a series of four elongated, polychrome, leaf-shaped medallions on a raspberry-red background with leaf scrolls. Two narrow borders featuring geometric floral garlands frame the composition. Karabakh means “black garden” and refers to a region extending across the southern part of Azerbaijan. It became an important center of weaving, with the establishment of numerous workshops, as early as the 17th century under the impetus of Muslim and Christian artisans. During the 19th century, carpets featuring European-style roses and based on French designs were produced there. Expert: Alexandre CHEVALIER
