Chirvan Seikour Rug (warp, weft, and pile in wool), Northeast Caucasus. Circa 1900–1950 (Minor imperfections, slight wear, and fraying.) Length: 431 cm; Width: 221 cm This elongated rug, known as a “kellei,” is adorned with a series of four St. Andrew’s crosses on a bronze background featuring geometric floral motifs. The main red border, featuring garlands of geometric flowers, is framed by two counter-borders. “The term ‘Shirvan’ refers both to a type of rug and to a region where a great many rugs are produced. Indeed, it is a vast, mountainous region inhabited by a diverse population. It stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, forming a natural barrier between Europe and Asia. Chirvan carpets are knotted in cities (Kuba, Dagestan, etc.) as well as in villages (Tchi tchi, Lesghi, Seikour, Perépédil, etc.) Bibliographic Reference: - SABAHI, T. – Splendors of Oriental Carpets, Atlas Publishing, Paris 1987, pp. 285–286 and p. 293.
