Hardinge (Charles) Recollections of India. Part I. British India and the Punjab [&] Part II. Kashmir and the Alpine Punjab, 2 parts in 1, first edition, 2 titles, 26 hand-coloured lithograph mounted plates, plates captioned in pencil, text vol. gutta percha perished all ff. loose, light foxing, original morocco-backed chemise, morocco label to upper cover, lacking cloth ties, mottling to covers, rubbed, wear and splitting to extremities, [Abbey, Travel 472; Tooley 244], folio, Thomas McLean, 1847. *** Rare issue with the plates hand-coloured and mounted on card. Hardinge was present in India in 1845 when the Sikh army crossed the Sutlej; within three weeks four pitched battles were fought at Mudki, Ferozshah, Aliwal, and Sobraon. Both sides faced heavy losses before Lahore surrendered to the British. Charles Stewart Hardinge's father, Sir Henry Hardinge, first Viscount Hardinge of Lahore, was Governor-General of India at the time and served under Gough as second in command, leading the centre of the field of Ferozshah. Charles Hardinge was for some time his father's private secretary.
