1218 - Newly Expanded Hamburg Hymnal for Sacred Use in Public Worship, as well as for Private Devotions at Home, published by the Hamburg Ministers. Hamburg: C. Neumann [c. 1710–1720] Narrow 12mo: frontispiece (double page)-[24]-1254-[42]-46 pp. (date cut off from the imprint; frontispiece with frayed edges; paper browned; in some places trimmed, shaving the text; a few stains; last leaf partially detached). Marbled calf, gilt-ruled boards with two brass clasps, spine with barely raised bands (traces of an oval medallion and metal corner pieces on the upper cover, and probably also on the lower cover, concealed by the silver binding, which is firmly attached at this point). Later encased in a hinged repoussé silvered-metal binding, the boards decorated with the Virgin and Child and the Crucifixion within diapered and lobed ornamental frames; the spine similarly decorated; shaped repoussé silver fittings covering the headcaps and extending over part of the edges at the head and tail. In good condition. A rare edition of this hymnal, frequently reprinted throughout the 18th century, illustrated with an allegorical double-page title-front engraved by H. Westphalen after Rond, featuring a panoramic view of the city of Hamburg. The last section, “Christliche Gebete” (46 pp.), has its own title page. The original binding was stripped of its metal fittings, except for the clasps, in order to be fitted into a finely crafted, custom-made silvered-metal binding. Ref. Cp. VD18 (editions rarely exceed ca. 600 pp.).
