1140 - BOCHIUS, Joannes; [VRIENTIUS, Maximus Aemylianus; OULTREMANNUS, Henricus d'] *Historica narratio profectionis et inaugurationis serenissimorum Belgii principum Alberti et Isabellae, Austriae archiducum* [...]. Antwerp Plantin Press, J. Moretus 1602 Folio: 500-[10] pp. (last folio, with printer’s mark, missing; frontispiece trimmed to the edge of the plate and mounted on laid paper; usual spotting and toning; some marginal water stains). Modern pastiche vellum binding, ink-titled spine with raised bands. First and only edition of one of the most sumptuous festival books issued by the Plantin Press. A splendidly illustrated account of the triumphal entries of Archduke Albert of Austria and his bride, Infanta Isabella of Spain, into Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, and Valenciennes in 1599. Illustrated with 2 pages of musical notation, an elaborate engraved architectural title page featuring fine portraits of Albert and Isabella, 3 additional engraved section titles—2 of which are architectural and depict views of Antwerp and Ghent—and 28 engraved plates (including 15 double-page plates) by Peeter van der Borcht, a pupil of Pieter Bruegel. The drawings have been variously attributed to Otto Vaenius, Joost de Momper, and Van der Borcht himself. Bochius (1555–1609), town clerk of Antwerp, wrote the accounts of the processions into Antwerp and Brussels, while the festivities in Ghent were described by Max. Vrientius and the procession into Valenciennes by Henricus d’Outreman. The authors provide detailed accounts of the festivities, festival architecture, floats, illuminations, and fireworks, and explain the emblematic and allegorical decorations. The title page bears a contemporary bookseller’s label pasted below the imprint: “Bruxellis, apud Simonem t’Serstevens [...]”. Only 775 copies of this book were printed. Ref. Imhof B-44. - Landwehr, SC, 62. - Berlin Cat. 2945. - Lipperheide 2657 (Sd14). - Simoni B-195. - STCV.
