Small jewelry casket. [Flanders, late 16th–early 17th century] 11.5 x 7.5 x 6.5 cm, wood covered with black leather, richly gilt-tooled with floral and foliate ornamentation, the hinged lid centered with a figurative scene within multiple ornamental borders, brass fittings comprising a curved carrying handle and two clasps, rising on four metal ball feet; interior lined with crimson silk (leather somewhat rubbed and cracked, with some loss of gilding; interior lining renewed; two ball feet detached but preserved). Good condition. The lid is centered with a gilt-tooled scene depicting a man and woman in aristocratic dress, facing each other on either side of a vine laden with grapes. The type and decoration are closely related to gilt-tooled leather jewelry cases or wedding caskets produced in the Southern Netherlands during this period.
