1090 - OVIDIUS NASO, Publius. Ovid’s *Metamorphoses*. Abridged by Gio Andrea Dell’Anguillara in octave rhyme. With annotations by M. Gioseppe Horologgi, and the summaries and marginal notes by M. Francesco Turchi. This new edition is adorned with elegant illustrations. Venice: B. Giunta, 1584, 4to: [16]-547-[1 bl.] pp., ruled in red (engraved title cut close to the frame and mounted on a sheet of laid paper, water stains, occasional soiling, ink migration from engravings, tear without loss restored on f. X2, corner loss on †3). Contemporary calf, gilt fillets and angular and central floral tools on boards, gilt-ornamented spine with raised bands and black label, a.e.g. (well-used, restored in the past with some margins missing). First of two editions printed by the Giunta in 1584, with the dedication beginning with “Le Metamorfosi d’Ovidio [...].” Nicely illustrated with copper engravings by Giacomo Franco: title (old reproduction?), 15 full-page engravings (one at the beginning of each book) combining multiple scenes from each book with labeled figures, within an elaborate scrollwork border featuring grotesques, 15 cartouches containing the “Argomento” with scrollwork borders (4 different designs). The translator, dell'Anguillara (1517–1570), modernized the *Metamorphoses*, converting the verse form to the “ottava rima” and introducing into the text allusions “to various contemporary works of Italian literature that were in vogue in his time” (Goldschmidt). With annotations by Giuseppe Orologgi, and “argomenti” and notes by Francesco Turchi. Ref. EDIT16 28513. - Mortimer, Italian, 343. - STC Italy 482. - Gamba 1556. - Goldschmidt 167. - Not in Pettas, Adams. Formerly owned by Prince Augustus Frederick, 1st Duke of Sussex (1773–1843), sixth son of King George III of England and brother of George IV. After the Duke’s death, his library at Kensington Palace was sold by Evans (large armorial bookplate with the motto “Si Deus pro nobis quis contra nos” and handwritten shelf mark; handwritten note: “Sale catalog No. 671, pt. V”; ref. Bibliotheca Sussexiana V:34 (“Very scarce”).
