BOMHOUWER, Christian Indulgence printed on vellum. Cologne, no publisher, 1509. Approx. 16.5 x 22.5 cm, vellum, Latin, with handwritten additions (verso blank). Mounted on a passe-partout (slight soiling). Extremely rare (unique?) indulgence for combating “heresies” in Livonia, issued on April 20, 1509, in the name of Pope Julius II by the Estonian canonist Christian Bomhouver or Baumhauer (Reval 1468–1518, Dorpat). At the time, Bomhouver served as secretary for Livonia to Frederick of Saxony, who was “Hochmeister” of the Teutonic Order from 1498 to 1510; Bomhouver later became bishop of Dorpat. The recipient’s name was added in ink (largely faded). A similar indulgence dated November 23, 1507, is preserved in the Diözesanarchiv Köln. Ref. Borchardt, Karl—“Late Medieval Indulgences for the Hospitallers and the Teutonic Order,” in: Bibliothek des Deutschen Historischen Instituts in Rom. 132 (2017), pp. 195–218. Prov. Library stamp on the reverse.
