1059 - ANCHEMANT, Ferdinand, “Treatise on the Nobility. Compiled from Various Authors by Ferdinand Anchemant of Broodsende.” [Bruges? c. 1630–1650] In-f°: [2]-153 ff., some of which are blank, brown ink on laid paper with a jester’s head watermark, in French, with some texts in Latin (some water stains at the bottom of the quires, slight stains in the margins of the title page, crushed insect in the margin on f. 97r, long correction in the same hand pasted onto f. 43r). Parchment binding, handwritten title on the spine (slightly soiled, traces of cords). Well preserved, untrimmed. Unpublished treatise structured into 34 chapters, followed by a “Treatise on Coats of Arms” in 18 chapters and several “additions,” carefully compiled by Ferdinand Anchemant (d. Ghent, 1675), Lord of Broodsende or Brezende near Bruges, an estate located in Donk-Maldegem. The author descended from an important line of nobility of the robe of Burgundian origin, including his great-grandfather Pierre Anchemant (1460–1506), a secretary and diplomat in the service of Maximilian of Austria and Philip the Fair. This family settled in Bruges, where several of its members held important municipal and ecclesiastical offices. According to D. Verstraete, Ferdinand may have been a boarder at the Franc in Bruges and a mayor, but due to issues of homonymy, his exact roles have not yet been sufficiently documented. In any case, he appears to have been the son of Corneille (Cornelis) Anchemant and Anne de Costere, and the husband of Marie van Volden and, in his second marriage, of Isabelle le Poyvre. Ref. Van de Woestijne, Paul, “Feodaal Maldegem (twaalfde eeuw tot 1795): De leenhoven en lenen,” in: Appeltjes van het Meetjesland, no. 64, 2013, pp. 209–308 (entry on p. 248, which cites: Verstraete, Daniël, “Ferdinand Anchement en Brezende,” in: Vrij Maldegem, 27, 1976, note 2). Prov. Philippe Kervyn of Volkaersbeke (1815–1881), Belgian politician and historian, author of the monograph “Les missions diplomatiques de Pierre Anchemant, 1492–1506” (Ghent, 1873) (bookplate with coat of arms).
