TOULOUSE, Jean de (workshop of) Leaf CIIII from the Pontifical of Juan Guzmán de Villacreces, also known as the Colombina Pontifical. [Avignon 1390] 37 x 27.5 cm, parchment, Gothic script, mainly in red pen on 2 columns of 24 lines, recto-verso. From the workshop of the famous miniaturist Jean de Toulouse, active in Avignon during the Great Schism of the Catholic Church (1378–1417). 1 leaf (2 pages) from the lavish pontifical of Juan de Villacreces, bishop of Calahorra and La Calzada (1382–1394) and of Burgos (1394–1403), and chancellor to Queen Leonor of Navarre. The original codex, commissioned by the bishop himself in 1390, contained 328 folios but was partially disassembled during the 1880s. The main part of the manuscript is now housed at the Biblioteca Capitular Colombina in Seville Cathedral, which was greatly enriched by donations from Hernando Colón, son of Christopher Columbus. Two fragments of the manuscript are housed at the Musée de Picardie in Amiens. Our fragment specifically deals with the ceremony for the ordination of a bishop. Ref. A.M.
